Kid-Approved Sweet Potato Oat Waffles
Kid-Approved Sweet Potato Oat Waffles

A simple fibre-friendly waffle recipe for little bellies, familiar breakfasts and real family mornings.
These sweet potato oat waffles were tested in a real family kitchen and officially approved by the toughest recipe critics of all - the kids.
They’re soft, lightly sweet and made with simple whole-food ingredients like sweet potato, oat flour and flaxseed meal. They can be served sweet with berries, yoghurt and maple syrup, or made savoury by leaving out the maple syrup and vanilla.
Because sometimes the easiest way to add a little more goodness into the day is to start with foods they already recognise.
Whole foods when you can. Simple support when you need it.
Why we like them
These waffles are made with simple ingredients that bring naturally occurring fibre, including sweet potato, oats and flaxseed meal.
They’re also flexible, which is always helpful when feeding little ones. You can serve them sweet, keep them plain, or make a savoury version depending on what your child already enjoys.
For beige-food days, fussy seasons, safe foods on repeat, or mornings where you just need something familiar and easy - these are a lovely little option to have up your sleeve. If your child is sensitive to colour changes in food, white sweet potato can be a great option instead of orange/golden sweet potato for a more familiar-looking waffle.
Ingredients
- ½ cup cooked sweet potato, mashed smooth
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup oat flour
- 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup
- ½ teaspoon vanilla paste or vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, optional
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder, optional, for a slightly lighter waffle
- Up to 1/4 cup milk of choice to loosen the batter as needed
- Butter or oil, for greasing the waffle maker if required

Method
Add the sweet potato, egg, oat flour, flaxseed meal, milk, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon and baking powder to a small blender or food processor, or use a stick blender to combine.
Blend until smooth.
Let the batter sit for 5 minutes so the oat flour and flaxseed meal can soften and thicken slightly.
Preheat and lightly grease (if required) your waffle maker.
Spoon the batter into the waffle maker and cook until the waffle is set, golden and easy to lift out.
Cool slightly before serving.
Serve with yoghurt, banana, berries, nut butter, maple syrup, or whatever familiar topping your little one already enjoys.
Sweet or savoury
For a sweeter waffle, keep the maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon in the recipe.
For a savoury waffle, simply leave out the maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon. You can serve it with avocado, cheese, egg, yoghurt dip, or alongside your child’s usual safe foods.
Little Belly Serving Idea
Serve these waffles with your child’s favourite drink.
If your family uses Keep It Moving, you can stir their usual serve into a familiar drink alongside breakfast for a little extra prebiotic fibre support.
Keep It Moving has a neutral taste and texture, and is designed to stir into foods and drinks your little one already enjoys.
Little Belly Note
Sweet potato, oats and flaxseed meal all bring naturally occurring fibre, making these waffles a simple whole-food option for days when familiar foods are doing the heavy lifting.
Keep It Moving is a food-based prebiotic fibre, not a medicine. Always follow directions and seek advice from a healthcare professional if symptoms persist or you have concerns.
